The
Annamalai University was founded in the year 1929 by
the munificence and single-minded devotion of the
farsighted and noble hearted philanthropist, the
Honorable Dr. Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar of
Chettinad, Kt., LL.D., D.Litt. Since then, during the
seventy-eight years, the Annamalai University has
grown into a premier, unitary and residential
University.
Annamalai University
today is spread over an extensive campus of about
one thousand acres and has the faculties of Arts,
Science, Indian Languages, Engineering and
Technology, Education, Fine Arts, Medicine and
Dentistry, and ,in all, they comprise 48 departments
of study.

Sir M.A. Muthiah Chettiar, B.A., D.Litt., the
founder Pro-Chancellor from 1984 assiduously nurtured
the growth and development of the University and
devoted his life to realize the aims of the
University.
The University being
unitary and residential in character, has about
20,000 students more than half of them accommodated
in its hostiles, acclaimed to be the biggest in the
country. Annamalai is one of the larges
Universities not only in India but in the world. It
has Associate Computer Training Centers across the
country and also at twelve overseas locations.
The Directorate of
Distance Education established in 1979 currently
offers one hundred and ten different programmers of
study under the distance education mode. It is
credited with the largest enrolment in India and is
well equipped in all terms. It has also the unique
distinction of offering first in India, Post
Graduate degree Programmes in Applied Psychology,
Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Bioinformatics,
MBA, M.Phil and Law through Distance Education mode
with a significant focus on Information Technology
education. All the courses under Annamalai
University are recognized by UGC, Ministry of HRD,
Govt of India and approved by the Distance Education
Council. The DEC approval is necessary for
employment in Government jobs as per Government of
India notification no.44,dated 02/03/1995.Of
late, the matter has become more serious due to
numerous universities not following the prescribed
norms while offering courses through distance mode.
Annamalai University is approved by the Distance
Education Council, New Delhi, Vide F.No. DEC/Recog/AU/TN/2006/2495,dated
15/02/2007.
Annamalai University
offers Scholarship as per G.O. Ms. No.
73,dt.14.07.2004 available for SC/ST students whose
annual income does not exceed Rs.1,00,000/- and
unemployed.
